Yesterday was the Disney VoluntEARS Bowl-A-Thon to raise money for Give Kids the World, which helps families with children who are suffering from a life-threatening illness by giving them an all-expenses-paid vacation at their resort in Central Florida.
We signed up and got sponsors and then basically played 10-pin bowling for a few hours, which was great. I was lucky enough to be able to sign up with my old work location, Mouse Gear, which means I could hang out with all my old work friends, including my Harry Potter partners-in-crime, Lizzie and Bec!
The bowling alley was in downtown Orlando, which I’d not visited before now. We met at Epcot Cast Services building and then all piled into a van to head off. When we arrived, the entire bowling alley was made up of people dressed in their Disney VoluntEARS t-shirts and there was a sign saying that no lanes were available until at least 5pm. Woe betide anyone who thought they’d just pop down for a fun bowling session that day D:
Despite signing up for hours of bowling, I suck at it. Luckily Lizzie assured me she did too, but both of us managed to get a strike that day!
I’d forgotten how much fun volunteering can be; while donating hours to sweeping streets, pulling weeds and serving food can be a great time, many places find new and inventive ways to raise money for good causes. So if you work for Disney, check out the VoluntEARS site (Hub login required), and if you live in Central Florida, find out how you can help Give Kids the World!
